Caring For Others

Philippians 2:4

When the Bible says “take an interest in others,“ it’s referring to all other people. This includes your wife, children, relatives, workmates, acquaintances, and total strangers—anyone who’s not the person looking back at you in the mirror. God understands that you’ll naturally look out for yourself and take care of business that’s important to you. You have to. That’s your responsibility. But this verse reminds you that you’re also your brother’s keeper. Take your children, for example. Because they’re children, they think as children and act like children. And they are also interested in the things that interest most children. Things that long ago ceased to interest you. But since you love them, you make an effort to engage with them. That includes taking time to listen to their jokes, as well as pausing to sympathize with their sorrows. To associate with them, you have to let go of the idea that your time is too valuable or that the rewards aren’t worth the trouble. Many people aren’t willing to put forth the effort to care for others. But there are indeed great rewards for doing so.
